Reasons and elimination methods for oil leakage of hydraulic seal Y-shaped ring

 

1. Oil leakage due to root wear and tear

The main reason for root wear is excessive pre compression. Therefore, attention should be paid to the inner and outer diameters of the sealing ring and the size of the sealing groove. It is necessary to choose the inner and outer diameters of the sealing ring, the oil hole diameter, and the size of the sealing groove reasonably, and pay attention to their coordination.

 

2. Oil leakage due to dust damage

The dirt in the hydraulic oil and the dirt entering the hydraulic cylinder from the piston rod often cause abnormal wear of the Y-shaped seal ring. Therefore, in addition to maintaining the cleanliness of the hydraulic oil, a dust ring should be installed at the outer end of the piston rod.

 

3. Oil leakage due to uneven wear

When the sealing ring is subjected to eccentric load, significant wear occurs at the location where the load is concentrated, while minimal or no wear occurs at other locations. Wear does not occur on the entire circumference of the lips, but rather on uneven wear.

 

The reasons for eccentric wear are: a Undertaking eccentric loads (such as large mold cylinders placed horizontally, which may experience eccentric loads due to piston gravity sagging); b. Eccentricity in sealing groove processing; c. Excessive clearance during coordination can result in uneven compression allowance (such as when the axis of the piston and piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder is not concentric with the center line of the installed sealing ring); d. The hydraulic cylinder is not assembled properly.

 

4. Oil leakage due to cracks

Cracks may occur when using Y-shaped seals under certain harsh conditions. For example, Y-shaped rings used under high temperature and pressure often experience this phenomenon, where cracks cause seal failure and oil leakage.

 

This can be solved by selecting appropriate materials and using a Y-shaped rubber clip. Additionally, Y-shaped lips are less prone to cracking.

 

5. Poor assembly and broken seal result in oil leakage

When inserting the piston with the Y-shaped ring into the cylinder, if no guiding tool is used, it will be difficult to push the piston in due to the compression allowance on the lip and the difficulty in chamfering the cylinder body hole. Due to the need to forcefully push in with a screwdriver, this can cause the sealing lip to flip and crack, resulting in oil leakage. So it is necessary to use the guide tool with a conical surface, as shown later, to install the Y-shaped seal ring. And during installation, be careful not to bring in iron filings, dust, and other dirt to avoid damaging the Y-shaped ring and causing oil leakage.

 

6. When the pressure of the Y-shaped ring exceeds 20MPa, a retaining ring should be used to prevent oil leakage caused by being squeezed into the gap and cut off.

 

7. The material of the seal is incompatible with the hydraulic oil.
